I
decided to launch a "Moms About to Blossom!" Ezine some weeks ago, while
looking out the window of a beautiful cabin in Mendocino, CA, taking in
a breathtaking view of trees and ocean, and counting my blessings.
Believe me; as a mom of a young daughter, opportunities
to spend 3 full days totally on my
own, focusing purely on my creative work while communing with
nature, don't come along every day, much
less decade. (Couldn't have done it without my
generous friends and family. THANK YOU!)
After
interviewing and counseling many wonderful, inspiring (and at times
overwhelmed and underappreciated) moms, I feel more strongly than ever
that we moms deserve to be blossoming right alongside our
kids! And, we
need to know (and experience deep down in our cells!) that we no longer
have to choose between ourselves and our kids, that our own happiness
can, must, and inevitably
WILL have an exceedingly
positive impact on our children and family life.
I've come to see us as big beautiful
holographic flowers, here to bloom into an imperfectly perfect! life of balance and fulfillment.
With our "self"
at the core, I envision us surrounded by 7 "petals" of life, each in
need of warm light, replenishing water and supportive
soil:
B
for Body(without which none of this would be
possible!)
L
for Love(for
our kids, communities & the
earth)
O for significant
"Other"(or our longing for that
other)
S
for Spirit(which includes
FUN!)
S
for Success(not just the money-making
kind)
O
for Organization(both inner and
outer)
M
for Mission(our purpose for being
here at
all)
Since our flower is holographic, the state of each of our
petals impacts the overall health of our
blossom.
Over the months to
come, I'll be exploring this flower with you, one petal at a time...
sharing inspiring stories, home-made cartoons, articles, tips, images,
videos, quotes and people - all with the aim of supporting us moms in
our personal blossoming.
Since moms are living gardens
themselves, I firmly believe
that cultivating a garden of happy, fulfilled and empowered moms
can change the world.
Please feel free to share this E-zine with anyone you know
who is a mom, has a mom, or who has a love for
moms!
Sending you sprinkles
of Mendocino sunshine & droplets of Pacific Ocean
air,
Rosy

My daughter was
named after my father's mother, Grandma Jewel.Like most Jewish grandmas, she had her form of "mischigas"
(idiosynchrasies). Sometimes her standards were a bit too high, and she
had trouble appreciating the musical taste of us crazy young kids. But
she had many many gifts. One in particular always struck me.
Grandma Jewel had a way of finding magic in the
mundane.Whether she was sculpting a
rose out of an orange peel, turning a few packets of Jell-O into a
rainbow masterpiece, or transforming the inside of a toilet paper roll
into an extension chord holder, she was making something extraordinary
out of something ordinary. And she was
having fun.
I don't
highlight Grandma Jewel's gift as a means of promoting domestic
perfectionism. I'm not suggesting we start flitting about our kitchens
like mini-Marthas, or whistling joyfully while scrubbing toilets in
butterfly formations (although now that I think of it, that may be worth
trying).
What I am
talking about is being open and willing to find beauty and magic in the
most unlikely places.I'm talking about having some
more fun, being a little more like our kids, bringing a sense of play
and adventure into our lives - even when we're doing something that
under most circumstances would be deemed unimportant, unimpressive and
dreadfully boring.
"As a
girl, Sheila Metcalf Tobin learned to tend the earth,
harvesting and appreciating its bounty at her grandfather’s knee.
In her grandmother’s kitchen she learned to deeply respect and
love the tradition, culture and art of making food by hand. Awareness of
the integral relationships between the land and the food and the people
were established in her childhood and made a lasting impression that
strongly influences her everyday choices and now more than ever her
artwork.Edible organic forms drawn on wooden surfaces
interact with the visible patterns of growth imbued in the wood,
creating a sensation reminiscent of the physical and sensual experience
of moving through a garden or landscape.
As an
artist, Sheila aspires to create images that ignite
feelings of reverence for the earth, cultivate appreciation of our
profound connection to the land and inspire each individual to learn
what they can do to act on earth’s
behalf."
(I'm looking to feature more women artists, poets, writers,
healers, photographers, etc. in the coming months! Please let me
know if you'd like to inspire blossoming moms with your own
blossoming!)
is for any woman whose been such a fabulous mother that
her kids are blossoming, but she isn't! If your life ever feels like a
giant interruption, if you've turned Guilt and Self-Neglect into Art
Forms, if your kids have trouble believing you once were fun, playful
and fancy-free, if as much as you love your family, you sometimes miss
yourself... then you're in the right place!
